Opinion: Kim Kardashian Twitter controversy

Tuesday, March 8th 2016 is International Women’s Day.  On this day we celebrate the social, economic, political and cultural achievement of women.  However, Twitter users managed to find negativity in this day.  As Kim Kardashian posted a nude photo of herself the day before, captioning it “When you’re like I have nothing to wear LOL”, celebrities criticized her for being a bad influence.  Tweets referring to Kardashian as a “hoe” sparked many to defend her.  Personally, I agree that a woman with many eyes on her should consider the controversy she’d evoke, but I also feel that any woman who is proud of her body should be able to present herself as she feels.  Double standards are breakable, and one way to avoid them is by ending body shaming.  On International Women’s Day, I believe it’s important to recognize that women are allowed to embrace their sexuality.  By using such words like “hoe” or “slut” against each other, we allow both men and women to buy into the idea that there’s negativity in being proud of sexuality.  Women should be able to express themselves as they wish.  While Kim Kardashian may not have the best reputation, she’s a successful woman who can do what she wants.
