The Bruin Voice

Kathi Duffel
Kathi Duffel has been advising The Bruin Voice since its inception in 1991. Starting with a staff of only eight students, the publication coined its motto "The Voice shall not be silenced" after early attempts by the administration to censor the newspaper. Since that time, the newspaper has gone on to win NSPA's National Pacemaker Award two times, and 1st Place Best of Show trophies seven times. Students have also won numerous individual awards from the Journalism Education Association, the San Joaquin Valley Scholastic Press Association, and various local, regional and national competitions. The students most recently led the effort to curtail an illegal social media policy imposed by the district with the help from the Student Press Law Center and the ACLU of Northern California. Duffel teaches both Intro and Advanced Journalism, in addition to Pre-AP and AP Language and Composition classes. She has a degree in journalism from the University of the Pacific and is a Certified Journalism Educator.
